Acne Fighting Foods

Posted by Marcus McFall on

We’ve all heard the phrase “heal from within”, but did you know this phrase may just be relevant to our skincare concerns, too? Skincare products are just one way to fight off acne, and to best combat this popular skincare concern, we should really be attacking it from all fronts.

There is evidence that supports that our diet may affect our skin, and It’s for this reason we asked our team of skincare scientists to share what types of food we should be eating if we want to combat breakouts. The healthiest skin comes from within, so to possibly increase your chances of achieving your healthiest skin, try snacking on these acne fighting foods.

Spinach

Spinach is packed with Vitamins C, E, and A, all of which contain antioxidants that are great for the health of your skin. The antioxidants found in spinach fight against all types of skin problems, including acne. If you are shooting for clearer skin, be sure to eat dark leafy greens like spinach on the reg.

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet Potatoes are rich in Vitamin C, which helps to boost collagen and create a tightening effect on the skin. Not only does eating this sweet veggie help with preserving a youthful complexion, but it also helps with clearing the skin!

Sweet potatoes contain anthocyanins that help with preventing blemishes and dark spots by keeping free radical activity under control. Potatoes that clear our skin AND make us glow? Sign. Us. Up.

Pumpkin Seeds

Don’t wait until Halloween to snack on this tasty treat for your skin, pumpkin seeds are a skin superfood that you should be snacking on all year round! These seeds are very high in zinc, which helps maintain collagen, protects cell membranes, and promotes skin renewal.

Salmon

Fatty fish like salmon do great things for our complexion. Salmon is packed with omega-3 fatty acids that are linked to reducing inflammation and puffiness and keeping skin moisturized. When you have a high level of healthy fats in your body, your skin will retain more moisture and be much less likely to break out.

Pistachios

Why should you be snacking on these heart-healthy nuts? They benefit our skin as much as they do our overall health. Pistachios are packed with antioxidants that decrease acne growth by controlling blood sugar levels that circle the acne causing hormone androgen.

Avocados

Avocados are packed with essential healthy fats that can help to benefit the health of our skin. Not only can avocados help you achieve a clearer complexion, but studies have found that they also can help protect your skin against UV related damage.

Avocados are also full of Vitamin E, another ingredient that is great for the health of our skin. This superfood also provides 11% of our daily recommended Vitamin C. As we know, Vitamin C is vital to the health of our skin, and while we highly recommend applying it topically to achieve the best results, it’s a great vitamin to feed your insides as well! An increase of your intake of Vitamin C can help increase the production of collagen while also protecting you from the damage of free radicals.

Kombucha

Looking for a new, tasty drink to sip on throughout the day? Kombucha is the way to go. Not only is it great for your gut, but it’s great for your skin, too! Kombucha can actually reduce your chances of experiencing inflammation by encouraging healthy bacteria to grow in your gut. Goodbye, inflammation, hello, clear skin!

Brazil Nuts

We are nutty about the way brazil nuts can help lead to a clearer complexion. This type of nut is loaded with selenium, an antioxidant that is super great for reducing inflammation often associated with acne. We love them because they are the perfect effortless on-the-go snack that can easily be added to your diet!

Carrots

You know how carrots have that rough outer layer on skin? Well, they may actually help to get rid of ours. Due to the potent doses of Vitamin A and beta-carotene, carrots might have the ability to act as a natural exfoliator for our skin.

They do this by increasing our skin’s cell turnover, so you could technically be getting rid of those dead skin cells without even touching your skin. They are also full of Vitamin A, and some research has found that Vitamin A deficiency could contribute to an increase in acne.

Green Tea

Another tasty liquid that our skin loves, green tea is the perfect snack to sip on when you’re working toward a clear complexion. Green Tea is ultra-hydrating, which increases cell turnover and keeps our skin soft, supple, and full of youth. When we are properly hydrated our chances of skin concerns like acne and dry skin also decrease. Green tea is also packed with acne fighting antioxidants like flavonoids and catechins.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are another fruit (erm, or veggie…?) that is packed full of Vitamin C. Increasing your intake of Vitamin C will do great things for your complexion. An increase in vitamin c in your diet could contribute to fighting free radicals, acne, and other skin-related concerns. So add these sweet little treats to your grocery list of acne fighting foods and watch your skin thank you.

Oysters

There is some evidence that an increase of zinc in the diet can help to combat breakouts and keep your complexion nice and clear. Oysters are full of zinc, which helps the body better absorb Vitamin A- another nutrient great for the health of our skin.

Legumes

If you are a vegan or vegetarian, don’t fret! You can get your acne-fighting zinc in foods other than meat and fish. Legumes are a great source of zinc for those who don’t eat meat! Chickpeas, lentils, and beans all contain a sufficient amount of zinc, so if you want to eat a complexion-healthy diet, add these acne fighters to your dinner plate.

Foods For Better Skin

Posted by Marcus McFall on

We love to learn more about the way our diet affects our skin, so to keep things festive we decided to see what fall inspired foods could lead to a healthier complexion. We asked our team of skin scientists to research all the snacks that could benefit our skin and how exactly they could do so, and this is the list they came up with!

Cinnamon

Cinnamon isn’t just a great spice to add to our fall lattes, it also has some pretty amazing benefits for the skin. The antibacterial properties found within cinnamon make it a great acne-fighter. Some studies even suggest that using a cinnamon-based oil can have great effects on the skin, including the treatment of breakouts.

While more research needs to be done, cinnamon has shown some promising results in clearing up our skin. Cinnamon also has great anti-inflammatory properties, further increasing its ability to clear up acne and acne scarring.

Beets

While there is currently no clinical research to prove that beets are beneficial to our skin, there is tons of speculation because of its high content in Vitamin C. Due to its high Vitamin C content, it is said that beets can actually contribute to anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, skin brightening, and anti-acne properties for the skin.

Studies have shown that Vitamin C can have great benefits for the skin. These benefits include fighting premature aging, increasing collagen production, and aid in repairing and preventing dry skin.

Cranberries

Cranberries are a fall season staple. According to some research, we should pile them into our skincare the way we pile them on our dinner plates this season!

As we know, antioxidants are wonderful for our skin, and cranberries are actually one of the most potent sources of antioxidants out there. In addition, some believe that there are many beauty benefits of cranberries.

One of these beauty benefits is that skincare containing cranberry can be extremely moisturizing. When used as an ingredient in facial oil, the antioxidants found in cranberries can more deeply penetrate the skin, providing a deeper and more intense hydration.

The high antioxidant content in cranberries can also help in fighting against free radicals. Feeding our skin antioxidants helps to fight against environmental stressors that cause premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and loss of elasticity.

Apples

Make sure you head to the apple orchard this fall because apples have tons of amazing benefits for our skin. We all know staying hydrated is key to having strong, supple, skin… but did you know that increasing your intake of apples can actually contribute to your skin’s hydration?

Apples hold a lot of water- so snacking on one can actually increase your overall hydration, which leads to a wide array of benefits for the skin. An apple a day keeps the dehydration away!

Apples also contain several key nutrients that help protect our skin from the sun’s harmful rays. While apples alone won’t do the trick, it doesn’t hurt to snack on these crisp protectors daily to load up on antioxidants that protect the skin. Ingredients found in apples can also work great as a natural toner for the skin, helping to balance the skin’s PH levels.

It’s for this reason that you will see a lot of toners that contain apple on the shelf at beauty stores! If you want to get super fall with your skincare routine, adding a toner that contains apple is a great way to do it.

Pomegranate

Similar to our other skin-favorite fruits, pomegranates are high in vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants that can be extremely beneficial to the skin. They are another super-fruit that is packed with Vitamin C, which we know is great for our skin in a lot of different ways.

Some of the ways that Vitamin C helps our skin (as we’ve previously mentioned) is by fighting premature aging, fine lines, wrinkles, blemishes, inflammation, acne scarring, and more. It’s always good to search for fruits high in Vitamin C when you are looking to eat your way toward a healthier complexion.

Luckily, this cute fall fruit is packed with it, making it the perfect autumn fruit to snack on. Some believe pomegranates to also be an ultimate age-fighter. Due to their incredibly high antioxidant content, they fight against free radicals and all the external factors that cause premature aging in our skin. Load up on these guys this fall to have your skin looking extra youthful!

Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkin seeds are the perfect spooky season snack to improve the health of our skin. Pumpkin seeds are loaded with healthy nutrients for our skin, one of them being zinc. These spooky little seeds can help with regenerating new skin cells and increasing the production of collagen, keeping our complexion supple and full of youth.

Like many other skin healthy foods, pumpkin seeds may also help in protecting our skin from environmental related damage because of their high antioxidant content. One benefit that comes with increasing your intake of pumpkin seeds do that not many other skin healthy foods offer is the regulation of oils within our skin.

Pumpkin seeds are fully of fatty acids that play a role in regulating the production of our skin’s essential oils. While this isn’t related to our skin, pumpkin seeds have also been found to increase hair growth, so if you’re looking to obtain extra-long locks this fall, make sure to save your pumpkin seeds after you carve your pumpkins this year!

Cauliflower

Another popular fall food that can help contribute to the health of our skin is cauliflower. Cauliflower contains a high amount of folate, which can help with retaining moisture to our skin. If you are worried about your skin drying out due to drier fall air, increase your intake of cauliflower and you could possibly reduce your chances of dealing with dry skin this season.

How To Get Smooth Skin

Posted by Marcus McFall on

When it comes to leading a happy and successful life, many people will tell you that “confidence is key”, and nothing gives you confidence quite like having a smooth and glowing complexion. Smooth skin, however, isn’t something that many people just naturally have.

But don’t worry, there are plenty of easy things you can do in your daily life to get you closer to having the smooth, clear skin of your dreams. In addition to lifestyle changes, there are also a number of skincare products that can help you achieve the smooth skin you are looking for.

Here are five simple and easy tips for smooth skin that you can apply to your life, TODAY!

Ways To Get Smooth Skin

Stay Hydrated

It’s no secret that drinking water is great for your body and mind’s overall health. But drinking water is one of the most important (and easiest!) things you can do to improve the complexion of your skin.

Drinking plenty of water helps to flush out harmful toxins from your body that negatively effect your skin, and allows for your skin cells to function at maximum efficiency. When your body has enough hydration, it gives you plumper and fuller looking skin. We recommend having eight to ten glasses of water today for the best results.

Eat a Healthy Diet

No surprise here that a healthy diet affects your skin’s health! It’s completely fine to indulge in your favorite pizza or ice cream every now and then, but constant junking and fried foods won’t do your skin any favors. Try to add foods with plenty of vitamin A, vitamin C, Zinc, and antioxidants to your diet. Vitamin C is especially important because it creates collagen, which adds structure and firmness to your skin. It also helps protect your skin from free radical damage. Free radicals are unstable atoms that can damage skin cells and cause aging.

If your sweet tooth cravings start to be too much to handle, try dark chocolate! The cocoa flavanols in dark chocolate improve the structure of your skin, decrease roughness and scaling on your skin, and it supports your skin’s defenses against damage from UV rays!

Get Your Body Moving

Not only will regular exercise and movement help strengthen your muscles and cardiovascular health, it also has a plethora of benefits for your skin. Exercise will help reduce inflammation in your skin, and helps to regulate skin-significant hormones.

Plus, sweating helps to remove some debris from your pores. Dr. Anna Guanche, a board-certified dermatologist in the Los Angeles area, notes that “exercise induces more blood volume to be pumped through the vessels of the face, leading to more micronutrients and healing properties to the facial skin.”

Put the Phone Down, and GET SOME SLEEP

Although sleep and what our bodies do when we sleep largely remains a mystery, we all know that we need it! Your body repairs itself and recovers from the day during sleep. A lack of sleep can lead to saggy under eyes, sunken in skin, and an unhealthy yellow or pale brown hue.

Protect Your Skin from Harmful UV Rays

Wear your sunscreen! The sun gives us light and life, and for many people it gives us energy! However, without proper protection the sun can lead to premature aging of your skin, and leave you with damaged spots. In addition to sunscreen, adding kale (lutein and zeaxanthin) and red tomatoes (lycopene) to your diet can also help protect your skin from harmful UV rays!

See? Healthy and unblemished skin doesn’t have to be difficult. Each of these lifestyle tips can be easily done, and with a little practice, can become daily habits.

In addition to the tips listed above, DermaBoss also has a handful of skincare products that can assist you on your journey to smooth skin!

Pineapple and Vitamin C Brightening Cleanser contains natural astringents that help to shrink and constrict pores, having a tightening and firming effect on your skin. Vitamin C when applied topically can reverse the signs of aging like hyperpigmentation, heal blemishes, and give your skin a healthy glow.

Vitamin C Serum with Hyaluronic Acid and Beta Glucan help to soothe and calm irritated skin and act as an anti-ager to firm and plump fine lines and wrinkles.

Cell Hydrating Serum with Hyaluronic Acid helps to enhance moisture and revitalizes your skin’s outer surface layers to appear smoother.

Now that you are armed with these five daily tips and have the support of DermaBoss behind you, you are ready to get out there and have the smooth glowing skin you’ve always dreamed of!

What Is A Skincare Fridge?

Posted by Marcus McFall on

If you are on the beauty side of social media, chances are you’ve seen a skincare fridge or two. Beauty influencers, bloggers, vloggers, and tiktokers alike all seem to have one of these things, and they are starting to pop up everywhere.

If you’re like us, you’re wondering… what the heck are these things? And, are they necessary...? Well, don’t worry, because we asked our team of skincare scientists to spill the TEA on skincare fridges. So, sip up… because for teatime today we are giving you all the info on skincare fridges you’ll ever need.

First off, what exactly is a skincare fridge?

Exactly what it sounds like. It’s like a mini fridge, but instead of a 6-pack of beer, you’re throwing in your favorite skincare products. Storing your favorite skincare products in a cooler temperature and away from the sun is great for them.

This is especially true if the products you’re using are all natural. The cool temperatures away from light help to preserve the freshness of your products, making them last longer. In addition to increasing the shelf life of your skincare products, storing them in a skincare fridge will keep the most active ingredients active for longer.

Another perk is that the cool temperature of the products feels GREAT when you’re applying them on your face. Not only does it feel great, but it’s also great for your skin. Applying cool temperatures to your complexion helps to stimulate blood flow, minimize pores, and soothe inflammation.

Trust us when we say, applying your serums at a cold temperature is a game changer. Keeping your serums in the fridge is a great way to have yourself feeling like you’re at the spa when you’re really just chilling at home.

So, the question remains… do you need a skincare fridge?

The short answer is no. You don’t necessarily need one, but we totally understand if you really, really want one. We’d be lying if we said we didn’t want one, too. Skincare Mini Fridges are about as aesthetically pleasing as it gets, and if you love skincare as much as we do, this is an adorable way to level up your skincare game.

Sure, there isn’t much difference between sticking your products in a skincare mini fridge opposed to the fridge in your kitchen, but where is the fun in that? Keeping your Vitamin C Serum next to the veggies isn’t quite as cute as stocking it in its own little mini fridge. Also, can we talk about the convenience? You mean, we don’t have to leave our vanity and stumble over to the fridge to grab our cooled skincare? Sign us up.

Although it may not be completely and totally necessary, that doesn’t change the fact that skincare mini fridges provide some very real benefits for our skin and skincare products. What are those benefits?

  • Extends the shelf life of your skincare products
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Keeps active ingredients active for longer
  • Soothing to the skin
  • Stimulates blood flow
  • Minimizes pores
  • Keeps bacteria away
  • Depuffs (we’re looking at you, under eye bags)
  • The excitement you will feel when you get to use your cute new skincare accessory

So, you may not need one, but you really, really want one, and you’ve decided you’re making the purchase. Now you’re wondering, what products should I keep in my skincare mini fridge? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. There are a bunch of different products that will thrive in your skincare fridge.

These include…

  • Eye creams

Eye creams are the perfect product for your new skincare mini fridge. We all know too well the puffy under eye bags that come with one more Netflix episode, one more glass of wine, or one more hour of scrolling that caused us to stay up a little bit past our bedtime.

Storing your eye creams in a skincare mini fridge is a great way to de-puff, brighten, and rid of those tough under eye circles. If you’re using a thicker eye cream, it should probably stay out of the skincare fridge, but thinner eye creams with a consistency more similar to a serum will thrive.

  • Sheet masks

Want to know the perfect way to bring the spa into your home? Storing your sheet mask in your mini fridge will have you feeling like you’re paying for a top of the line facial.

  • Mists

We love a refreshing face mist, and what we love even more is a cool, refreshing face mist. Try storing a rose water spray in your mini fridge and spritz it throughout the day to wake up you and your skin.

  • Serums

Our favorite skincare products to store in the mini fridge are serums! Especially our cell hydrating and Vitamin C Serums. Not only will they last longer when stored in your mini fridge, they will stimulate blood flow and feel great when applied to the skin. Serums made of natural ingredients are the best candidates as they don’t have icky chemicals and preservatives keeping them artificially fresh. Storing these clean beauty products in the fridge will keep them super fresh super long without the help of harmful chemicals!

  • Facial tools

Facial tools like jade rollers (or spoons if you’re super old school) are great for the skin, and even better when they’re stored at cooler temperatures. Doing so will promote depuffing and blood circulation, and just like with everything else.. it feels really nice on the skin.

  • Nail Polish

We know… we know, this isn’t a skincare product, but we couldn’t keep this trick to ourselves. You know how nail polish can get really, really tacky after just a couple of uses? Well, storing it in your skincare mini fridge will solve this problem! Keep your favorite polishes in the cold to preserve them longer and avoid a tacky mess.

Skincare For Oily Skin

Posted by Marcus McFall on

Not a single person in the entire world wants to spend their day constantly dabbing their face to deal with their oily skin. If you are part of the 45 to 55 percent of adults who suffer from having oily skin, you are all too familiar with this struggle. Now don’t hate me when I say this, little can be done to prevent this skin condition. But don’t lose hope! There is a plethora of ways to manage your skin’s oil production.

First and foremost we need to talk about why some skin produces more oil than others. No matter who you are, where you live, or what you do, your skin is going to produce and secrete oil. Under each of your pores is a sebaceous gland that produces natural oils called sebum.

This sebum keeps our skin hydrated and healthy. But some of these glands work on overdrive and produce too much oil. This excess amount of oil can potentially lead to breakouts because the oil can mix with dead skin cells and get stuck in your pores.

There are seven key reasons why our sebaceous glands produce excess sebum/oil:

  • Genetics: oily skin runs in family
  • Age: Skin produces less oil the older you get, and your glands slow down. One benefit to producing excess oil is that it can help your skin show less signs of aging.
  • Location/Time of Year: Hot and humid climates, as well as summer weather, can lead your skin to produce more oil.
  • Enlarged Pores: Pores can stretch out due to age, weight fluctuations, and prior breakouts. Larger pores in general tend to produce more oil than their smaller counterparts.
  • Using the Wrong Skin Care Products: Make sure to use the correct products for the seasons and be aware of what chemicals are in the products you’re using.
  • Doing “Too Much” Skin Care: Washing and exfoliating your face too much can strip away your natural oil, sending your sebaceous glands into overdrive to make up for the oil that is missing.
  • Skipping Your Moisturizer: Your skin still needs to stay hydrated! Find a lightweight water-based moisturizer and apply after cleansing and toning your face.

Oily skin can be one of the trickiest and most frustrating skin conditions to deal with, but lucky for you there are some treatments you can do to keep your facial oil to a minimum!

  • Wash Regularly: A simple gentle soap and water can go a long way in curbing oil production! Avoid soaps with fragrances and harsh chemicals.
  • Use A Toner: Use toners with natural astringents (chemical that shrinks or constricts body tissues) such as witch hazel. Witch hazel is high tannin and anti-inflammatory and can make enlarged pores smaller and remove leftover bits of product and makeup.
  • Pat Your Face Dry: A pulling motion while drying will irritate and stimulate your skin into producing more sebum.
  • Use Blotting Pads & Medicated Pads: Specially designed absorbent papers can pull oil from the skin. These pads won’t slow down or stop oil production, but they can help remove oil from your face throughout the day. Try to find pads with salicylic or glycolic acid.
  • Facial Masks: Clay, honey, and oatmeal masks are all great options, and each have their individual benefits for helping with oily skin.
  • Diet: Avoid greasy foods and trans fats. Eat a well-rounded diet full of whole foods.
  • Use Your Moisturizer: If you take one thing away from this, please let it be to use your moisturizer!

The best prevention for oily skin is to find a consistent skin care routine that works for you, and stick to it!

So, where does DermaBoss fit into all of this?

Well the answer is right smack dab in the middle! First, our Pineapple and Vitamin C Brightening Cleanser acts as a natural exfoliator, removing any excess dead skin cells that could mix with your skin’s oil and clog your pores. After cleansing your face, applying our Vitamin C Serum will use the combination of Vitamin C, Beta Glucan, and Hyaluronic Acid to natural promote collagen production and maximize skin hydration. Finally, after allowing our Vitamin C Serum to dry, layer on our Cell Hydrating Serum.

By helping to balance the moisture of your skin, the rejuvenating serum works to regulate the overproduction of oils, reducing clogged pores and blemishes, all while adding a boost of brightness to your skin!
